Wastewater Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I am using a wash water recycle system and my water smells like rotten eggs. What should I do?

A. A rotten egg smell is usually the result of anaerobic (no oxygen) bacterial growth in the sump. Look at your sump early in the morning after a period of inactivity. If you see small bubbles coming up check to see how much sludge has accumulated in the bottom of the sump. You may need to clean it out. If you still have an odor problem check the timer for internal recycle operation (recycle of treated water back to the floor drain or sump) and check your disinfectant for proper application. Internal recycle time should be a minimum of 2 hours over night or for a period of inactivity that is 8 hours long. In warmer weather increase the recycle time as needed. We have seen one instance where continuous internal recycle was required to eliminate an odor. However, no amount of internal recycle will work if you have a poorly designed sump system or excess sludge in your sump.
